Drone Backpack – From Prototype to Product 

Imagine a backpack that can transform the way drones communicate, streaming live video directly to command centres with ease. This is the vision behind our innovative Drone Backpack. 

The Vision 

We were tasked with creating a portable communications device that could stream live drone video using a specific video codec, from the drone operator’s controller to the command control room via the cloud. 

The Proposal 

Our solution was to integrate a Teleste encoder to convert the direct HDMI stream to IP, and transmit it via a 4G gateway into a cloud-based Video Management System (VMS). This setup offers various configurations to meet diverse customer needs. 

The Challenge 

The real test was to incorporate these systems into a field-portable solution that could operate under various conditions for extended periods without service degradation. The result? A ruggedized system that can be rapidly deployed in both urban and remote locations, providing real-time situational awareness at the command centre. This plug-and-play package requires minimal training, making it incredibly user-friendly. 

Tailored Solutions 

While initially designed for cloud integration, we’ve also customized this system for local and council authorities using various cloud VMS. No cloud VMS? No problem! We can tailor the system to your infrastructure, whether you need a rapid deployment solution or an on-premises setup. 

Future Developments 

We’re not stopping here. This year, we’re launching a 5G system that will offer increased bandwidth for high-definition and multi-sensor streaming, and the potential to create ultra-low latency private 5G networks. 

Additionally, our 5G on-drone system is in development, promising telemetry, streaming, and control for over-the-horizon applications in the next generation of autonomous aerial vehicles.
