CWDM design, Metro – Edinburgh (service) 

Edinburgh’s fibre-based CCTV system, provided by BT’s Surveillance Solutions spans city-wide. The project took place between 2022 and 2023 creating a challenge to provide a considerable upgrade to the current system to incorporate 1 Gigabit and 10 Gigabit connections whilst utilising current fibre infrastructure.  

With several hundred camera feeds, the optimal technology to use was CWDM (course wavelength division multiplexing), providing the ability to combine multiple streams into a single fibre. The challenging topography of the system was architected in partnership with BT and Uplec designed and manufactured hardened CWDM multiplexers and Optical Add Drop modules to suit the diverse environments from roadside cabinets to datacentres.  

The success of these services and products have led to country-wide applications in metro authorities and customers requiring increased bandwidth over existing fibre infrastructure.
